New-New Camera

(please excuse the awful phone photo, obviously my camera was being used!)

I'll admit it; when it comes to technology I'm awful. Not in the sense that I can't do any of that stuff, but more in the fact that I'm pretty much never happy. I started off last year with the Canon 1100D DSLR and after a few happy months sold that one because it was far too big and clunky to carry around on a daily basis, not to mention the photos were just okay and not amazing other than the telephoto which wasn't used often enough. This led to the purchase of the Nikon Coolpix P510, a 'bridge' camera with a far higher megapixel count and a great zoom. Again, a few happy months and I cooled towards the camera; again, the photos weren't of amazing quality and the camera itself felt very limiting with no good timer setting or way to use a remote. FINALLY, last month I got my hands on the Olympus PEN E-P2 at an amazing price on eBay (£180! still selling new for £500+ some places) and I can say that I am really quite happy with this baby. It's retro styled, doesn't feel cheap with a weighty metal body and is super compact with micro four thirds lenses, the only con is the lack of flash and I just nabbed a flash gun for £18 off amazon so no worries there. Hopefully we will live happily ever after!

  1. I find camera and gadgets in general a rather uncomfortable thing to look for. I researched like crazy prior to purchasing mine, literally for months! I just didn't want to splash out that money then regret it. I have to say I'm not particularly good at taking photos though, so don't think I do my Nikon DSLR justice!

    1. I did Photography A-level for two years, so I had a little bit of a head start! I agree with you though, cameras are like cars and they lose so much of their value if you buy a new one. I think I was right to get second-hand this time as there's nothing wrong with the camera. xx

  2. I've been intrigued by these Olympus cameras for a while now, thanks for the review! I did Photography at A-level but we never actually learnt much about cameras funnily enough! It was more about writing about photos and artists xx

    1. They are well worth the money if you get them second hand! I did a lot of actual using cameras in my A-Level; we had a studio and everything so lots of practical stuff! That's when I started really enjoying using DSLR-style cameras. xx

  4. I know so little about cameras, I was looking at some at lunchtime yday but I have no idea what I would need - my compact digital one is just about on it's last legs. In fact, I recently did a mystery shopping assignment at a camera shop and was given so much information, I just don't know what would be the most suited to me :(

  6. Four Third cameras are perfect, and the EP2 is beautiful! I have a little Sony NEX. Brilliant picture quality, yet so portable! (I did photography at uni and have a Canon EOS 5Dmk2, but I much prefer the NEX!)

    Have fun with it :)
